February can be a tough month. The days are short, routines feel heavy, and we can begin to feel a little disconnected. But connection doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated to be meaningful.
Inspired by a post from The Financial Diet, we adapted this list with a State College spin for simple, low-cost ways to spend time together that feel grounding, fun, and doable right now. Which one might you try?

3 Dots Downtown is a third space for creatives
1. “Third Place” Regular Meet-Ups
Keeping a standing date at a favorite third place (not home, not work) can be surprisingly powerful in winter. Having a regular meet-up set in the calendar makes planning easy.

2. Chill Body Doubling
Sit in the same room doing different quiet things: reading, journaling, knitting, stretching… Anything goes as long as phones are set aside.
Local Spots: Schlow Library or the Palmer Museum of Art. The lobby of the Nittany Lion Inn also has cozy nooks – some with fire places – and table space for this kind of gathering.

3. Life Admin Co-Working (but make it social)
Everyone brings a short list of tasks they’ve been avoiding. Set a 30-minute timer and work quietly together: pay bills, cancel subscriptions, schedule appointments, write emails. Celebrate what gets done, then stop (or keep going).
Local Spots: Webster’s Book Store Café has large tables tucked back in the books for larger groups. The Happy Valley LaunchBox has a co-working space open to the community 8 AM – 5 PM during the week.
4. Skill-Swap Night
Teach each other one oddly specific thing you know how to do: budgeting, sourdough basics, power tool know-how, an eye makeup trick. Host it in a living room or online.
5. Errand Dates
Turn chores into companionship. Grocery shopping, Goodwill drop-offs, farmers markets, returns, post office runs… Riding along together makes it lighter.

6. Sunrise or Sunset Watching
Bring a thermos of coffee, tea, or cocoa. Find a bench or bring camp chairs. Watch the sky change and talk about whatever comes up.
Local Spots: Tudek Park, Sunset Park, the top of Mount Nittany or Musser Gap
7. Memory Mining Date
Scroll through old photos, playlists, texts, or notes together. Reminisce. Laugh. Let past joy remind you it still exists.
8. Declutter Power Hour
Meet online or in person and each tackle one small space — a drawer, folder, cabinet, or email inbox. Stay connected while you work.
9. Neighborhood Observers
Sit somewhere public and invent backstories for passersby. Whoever’s the most unhinged wins.
Local Spots: Benches on Penn State’s campus or downtown
Sometimes the best thing about living here in State College isn’t a big event. It’s the small, shared moments that help us feel more connected to one another and the place we call home.
